This just in, from my brother:
"I think you will appreciate this: The MLS team Philadelphia Union has a shirt sponsor for the first time this year; about 2/3 of the league's teams have a sponsor's logo on the front of their uniforms. Most clubs get 2-4 million bucks a year from these deals, so the cash is nothing to sneeze at. Sometimes it adds a little coolness factor (XBox in Seattle, Corona for Chivas USA), sometimes it's just part of the corporate presence (BMO, Bell, VW, Alaska Airlines, Amway), sometimes it's strange (Xango, Herbalife), and sometimes the whole team is named after the sponsor (Red Bulls!).
So... Philly will have BIMBO across their jerseys for the next four years.
This is the huge Mexican bakery company (pronounced "beem-bo") behind brands like Entenmann's, Thomas', Arnold, Freihofer, Boboli, etc. They also sponsor two or three of the biggest and most popular clubs in Mexico, and another club in costa rica or honduras, I forget which, so their logo is actually a pretty recognizable feature on soccer jerseys already. Now that in itself might not be the end of the world - I think most Americans would double-take at that word splashed across a shirt, but would probably get over it and hopefully have some awareness of global corporate capitalism and non-American brands. But who signed off on BIMBO's plan to run a nationwide "Soccer Mom of the Year" promotion?!?! Come on!"
Love it.
