Gaggle

Driving near the reservoir in Brighton the other day, the car ahead of me slowed to an obnoxious crawl. I assumed they'd spotted one of the many speed traps the Boston Police like to set along there, and followed suit. They tapped their brakes about 5 times and alternated between speeding up and slowing down again and again before eventually speeding off around the next curve. I wondered, "What the hell?" and hovered in second, just in case a cop was lurking.

And then I saw them.

Two geese had made their way down the embankment and had stepped into the bike lane at the right side of the road. One would take a webbed step forward, then look back at the other, as if to say, "Well? C'mon!" Remembering the Boston classic Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey, I obviously had only one option. Wishing I had a camera with me, I sat in neutral as a line of cars built up behind me - and behind the car in the opposite lane, who had thankfully also agreed to let our winged friends pass.

Slowly, deliberately, and comically, they waddled on across the road to safety... and and life unpaused and we all drove on with a little smile.

Relating the story to Jess later on, she quipped, "What, no courtesy honk?"
